Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is located within the Village of Put-In-Bay, Ohio on South Bass Island, marking the Battle of Lake Erie fought during the War of 1812. The National Park Service manages the site, which was established to honor those who fought in that battle and to celebrate the long-lasting peace among Great Britain, Canada and the U.S. Its centerpiece is a Doric column rising 352 feet over Lake Erie, situated 5 miles from the longest undefended border in the world.

The site suits visitors interested in maritime and military history, from the War of 1812 through the Civil War, as well as those drawn to the surrounding lake scenery. Reaching the memorial requires a ferry trip, since it is located within the Village of Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island, making it as much an island excursion as a historical visit.

The memorial column is the dominant feature of the park, a Doric column that rises 352 feet above Lake Erie. Visitors can view the international flags lining the sidewalk leading to the memorial building, and the grounds include a visitor center with a two-story window and porch. A carronade, a type of historic cannon, is fired for demonstrations on the site, part of the park's living history and historic weapons programs.

Near the memorial, several short named paths let visitors explore the surrounding area on foot, including the Scheeff East Point Trail at 0.4 miles, Duff Woods Preserve at 0.37 miles, Ken's Trail at 0.33 miles, Cooper's Woods Shady Path at 0.3 miles, and the Story Walk Trail at 0.16 miles. These routes, mapped in the area around the memorial, offer walking options distinct from the memorial plaza itself.

Practical notes

The visitor center and park grounds remain open and free each season, though the Plazas, Rotunda, and Observation Deck of the Memorial will be inaccessible for the 2026 and 2027 seasons due to the Upper Plaza Rehabilitation. A Timed Entry Reservation for the observation deck costs $10.00, and an annual entrance pass for the park costs $35.00, valid for 12 months from the date of purchase and covering the pass-holder plus 3 other adults for the observation deck. The park can be reached by phone at 4192852184. Summer months can be extremely hot and humid, with occasional and sudden severe thunderstorms, and in winter the memorial and visitor center are closed.
