East Harbor State Park

On the ground

The park occupies a peninsula where a roughly 2-mile-long strip of beach and dunes separates the harbor from open Lake Erie. That harbor is the former mouth of the Portage River, which once crossed the Catawba Island peninsula before draining into the lake; the surrounding basin was shaped by glaciers that retreated about 12,000 years ago, leaving depressions that filled with meltwater to form the Great Lakes. That glacial history is visible today at Glacier Grooves, one of the park's named natural features, and is explained further by a Historical Marker on-site. A 1,500-foot sand beach on Lake Erie is the main swimming area, with modern restrooms, changing rooms, and outdoor showers nearby, though dogs are not allowed on the swim beach itself.

Walking and biking routes are short and interconnected rather than a single long trail: the Red Bird Trail covers 0.89 miles, West Harbor Trail 0.85 miles, Meadow Trail 0.84 miles, Channel Dunes Loop 0.64 miles, Middle Harbor Trail 0.47 miles, and Blackberry Trail 0.11 miles, among other mapped routes near the park. Several of these double as winter routes — Channel Dunes Loop, Meadow Trail, and Middle Harbor Trail are also used for snowmobiling in season. Before European settlement, the region was home to the Ottawa and Wyandot, and an east-west trail once ran along the southern shore of Lake Erie linking Pittsburgh and Detroit settlements as well as the Scioto Trail from the south; Native American occupation of the area continued until the War of 1812. East of the park, Marblehead Lighthouse was built in 1821 to guide navigation into Sandusky.
