Paint Creek State Park

On the ground

The land here sits at the edge of the Appalachian Plateau, the escarpment dividing Ohio's hilly east from its flatter west. Most of the plateau to the southeast avoided glaciation, but this area did not escape entirely: nearby Rocky Fork Creek was dammed by glacial ice, reversed direction, and cut the 75-foot gorge that remains today, where the rare wildflower Sullivantia blooms each mid-summer. The valley itself has a long human history — prehistoric cultures raised earthworks throughout the region, and the Shawnee held the Paint Valley as home ground, a history marked by conflict, including the killing of a Shawnee named Waw-will-a-way near the confluence of the Paint and Rattlesnake creeks. The creeks later turned early grinding mills before the modern park and lake took shape.

Within the park boundary, named historic features include Anderson Road (Historic) and the Dam/Spillway structure, with a separate Spillway noted as well — remnants and infrastructure tied to the lake's creation. Hikers can choose routes from 0.75 to 6 miles through open meadows and mature woodland, while the park separately maintains 25 miles of bridle trail and 12 miles of mountain bike trail for those on horseback or wheels. Mapped routes near the park include the South Loop (3.63 miles), Barrier Ridge (2.55 miles), Kamelands Trail (2.07 miles), Ashy Sunflower Trail (1.05 miles), and Etawah Woods (0.73 miles). Climbers can work the Harmony Trail and Spillway Wall, while the lake itself carries boaters, a 1,000-foot sand beach, and anglers working for saugeye, bluegill, bass, catfish and crappie.
