On the ground

The park's history reaches back thousands of years, beginning with Paleo-Indian hunter-gatherers who moved north as the glaciers retreated. A 1980 land study confirmed occupation as far back as 12,000 years, and in 1981 Dr. Michael Pratt excavated 90 artifacts dating between 1300 and 1500. The land between the Maumee River and Sandusky Bay once marked a border between two Native American tribes. The Trautman Nature Center, opened in 1993, stands at the trailhead of the park's wetland boardwalk system and draws more than 27,000 visitors annually.

From the nature center, the Interpretive Boardwalk runs 2 miles and is ADA accessible, threading through the wetlands. The paved Bike Path runs 5 miles and connects to the City of Oregon Bike Trail. The Mouse Trail, mapped at 2.36 miles, doubles as a cross-country ski route in winter, and a Storybook Trail near the Quilter Lodge carries a children's story in segments along a mowed path through wet meadow. Two sand beaches, one on Lake Erie and one on the park's inland lake, share restrooms and outdoor showers, with swimming allowed in designated areas. The inland lake covers 57 acres and is open to sailing, canoeing, and other non-motorized boating, and it also carries two wheelchair accessible fishing piers, while Lake Erie itself is known as the "walleye capital of the world" for walleye, channel catfish, freshwater drum, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. Golfers have the Maumee Bay State Park Golf Course, described by the agency as having low, rolling mounds, bent grass fairways, greens and tees, and numerous sand bunkers and ponds, and a Pollinator Plot is listed among the park's natural features. The park's grounds and adjacent trails total 93 mapped points of interest, including 21 trail-related features, 10 camping features, and 59 day-use features. Beyond maintained park trail, mapped walkable ways in the surrounding area add up to 20.53 miles across 149 segments of dirt, grass, paved, asphalt, unpaved, and concrete surfaces.
