State Park · Ohio · Ohio Department of Natural Resources

Middle Bass Island State Park is located in Middle Bass Island, Ohio, in the western basin of Lake Erie, a 141-acre property managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources describes it as offering visitors a glimpse at Ohio's glacial and cultural past. This is a park organized around water access rather than long hiking, suited to boaters, day-trippers arriving by ferry, and anyone interested in the island's winery history.

It is built around boating: the park's marina offers day-use and overnight boat slips, with 184 slips total, 150 electric and 34 non-electric, and a maximum boat length of 52 feet. The marina operates from May 1 through October 15 and includes a Harbormaster building with showers, flush toilets, and bike and kayak rentals. Day-use dock rental is arranged by phone at (419) 285-0311 for $25 with no electric, while overnight and transient dockage must be booked online, with a minimum two-night stay required on holiday weekends. Camping is primitive only, available from early May to mid-October, with no recreational vehicles allowed, and can be reserved by calling (866) 644-6727.

On the ground

The park's historic centerpiece is the Historic Lonz Winery, whose grounds trace back to 1865, when Andrew Wherle built the island's first winery, the "Golden Eagle Wine Cellar," which became the largest winery in the U.S. at 500,000 gallons annually. In 1906 August Schmidt built what would become the Lonz Mansion, later named for George and Fannie Lonz. The mansion is now available as an overnight rental, with reservations covering all four bedrooms, booked by calling 1 (440) 479-6615 or online. On the winery grounds, The Press House concession serves refreshments and hosts live entertainment in season, and its patio and pavilion can be rented for daytime events.

On land, the park's named routes are short: the Scheeff East Point Trail runs 0.4 miles, Ken's Trail covers 0.33 miles, and the Burgundy Bay Trail adds 0.24 miles. Many paths inside the park are paved and can accommodate strollers and bicycles, and bicycles are available for daytime rental at the Harbormaster building. Outside the park boundary, the rest of the island has an airport, post office, stores, eateries, and vacation rentals.
