A dedicated GPS mapping app fills that gap, letting you plan a route, follow it in real time, and record where you actually went. Scouting Routes Before You Go
Before setting out, spend time studying the area on satellite imagery and topographic layers. Look at how roads and trails connect, where elevation changes sharply, and where water crossings or washouts might occur. Satellite imagery is especially useful for spotting recent changes, like a washed-out section of road, that older map data might not show.
Cross-reference more than one map layer when possible. A topographic layer shows terrain shape, a satellite layer shows current ground cover and obstacles, and a roads-and-trails layer shows official routes and their designations. Comparing these together gives a more complete picture than any single layer alone.
Planning a Route

Recording Your Track
Recording a track as you travel creates an accurate log of the route you actually took, which can differ from the plan once you account for detours or on-the-fly changes. This recorded track is useful for retracing your steps, sharing an accurate route with others, or simply reviewing distance and elevation gain after the trip.
Choose a lightweight map layer for active recording if your device has limited battery or storage, since heavier imagery layers draw more power. Whatever layer you record on, periodically confirm that your device is still tracking, especially after long stops, since some apps pause recording automatically when idle.
Navigating in Snow and Winter Conditions
Winter travel adds its own hazards, and paper maps alone often can't reflect current snow depth or plowed status. Look for a winter-specific base layer if your app offers one, and cross-check ski area or nordic trail maps against a topographic layer to understand terrain steepness and avalanche exposure before heading out.
In snow country, waypoints marking known safe pull-outs, warming spots, or bailout routes are especially valuable, since visibility and conditions can change quickly. Always check current avalanche and road condition information from official local sources before a winter backcountry trip; an app's map data is not a substitute for that.
Using GPS Navigation On the Road and Off It
The same tools that help with backcountry routes work well for planning road trip itineraries, letting you string together stops and scenic detours in advance. For off-road driving specifically, look for a mode that keeps the map oriented to your direction of travel and shows your position clearly against trail lines, since this is more useful at low speeds on rough terrain than a standard driving view.
If your vehicle supports it, projecting your navigation app onto the dashboard display can keep directions in your line of sight, which is safer than glancing down at a handheld device. Whatever your setup, mount your device securely and keep a paper map or offline backup for areas where you expect no signal at all.
Working Offline
Cellular coverage disappears quickly once you're off main roads. Download the map layers and route data you'll need before you leave reliable coverage, not after. Check that your offline download actually includes the full area you plan to cover, including any alternate or bailout routes, not just the main path.
Carry a secondary way to navigate, such as a printed map or a second device, in case of battery failure or device loss. GPS apps are a major improvement over guesswork, but they work best as one part of a broader plan that includes basic map-reading skills and awareness of your surroundings.
