James A Garfield National Historic Site

James A Garfield National Historic Site is located in Mentor, Ohio. Managed by the National Park Service, the site centers on the Garfield family home and grounds, with the front porch as its signature feature: in 1880 Garfield used it as a platform to greet thousands of well-wishers during his presidential campaign, and the National Park Service describes it today as a gateway to the story of the Garfield family.

On the ground

The house itself is the main feature, reached by a short walk from the visitor center; the National Park Service notes it is about a 100 yard walk between the two, and advises checking weather conditions before a visit since winters bring cold, snow, and ice from January through early March while summers can turn humid and reach into the 90s. Inside and around the property, guided tours cover the Garfield family's story, and a windmill on the grounds was built by Lucretia Garfield after her husband's assassination; it pumped water to a 300 gallon holding tank on the third floor of her home.

Outside, the grounds include the Bluebell Trail, a short 0.27-mile route, part of a small network of paths and walkways mapped near the site totaling 1.24 miles across 18 segments, surfaced in gravel and concrete. This is not a hiking destination; the walking here supports the historic core of house, porch, and windmill rather than any extended trail system.

Practical notes

The visitor center and grounds are open daily from 10 am to 5 pm in May, June through October, and Friday-Saturday-Sunday the same hours from November through April, with guided house tours offered daily; in May, house tours begin after 12 pm, and from June through October they begin after 10 am. Groups of six or more require reservations, and schools and groups can arrange weekday tours by calling 440-255-8722. The site is located at 8095 Mentor Avenue, Mentor, OH 44060; from Interstate 90, exit at Route 306, head north to Route 20, then east on Route 20 about 1.5 miles to the site on the north side of Mentor Avenue. From Route 2, exit at Route 306, head south to Route 20, then east on Route 20 about 1.5 miles to the same location.
