On the ground

The name Erie comes from the tribal name of Native Americans who inhabited the area until 1655, and the lake served as a principal avenue of transportation for Native Americans and frontiersmen alike. French trappers eventually established trade routes on Lake Erie in the mid-1600s after earlier French settlers had overlooked the lake for a shorter overland route linking Lake Ontario and the western Great Lakes. The landscape shows the changing effects of Lake Erie's geologic history, ground that has at times been underwater and at other times miles from water. That record traces back to the Pleistocene, when continental glaciers advanced and receded across Ohio at least four times, scouring and widening an existing river valley.

Today the shoreline itself is the park's organizing feature. A 600-foot sand beach lines the Lake Erie shoreline, with a designated swimming area and a separate dog swim area at the west end, while Geneva Marina offers access to Lake Erie's central basin and is capped along its east breakwall with a sidewalk. ODNR maintains six miles of multi-use trails used by hikers, snowmobilers, and cross-country skiers, plus a 2-mile paved trail with scenic views of Lake Erie where motorized vehicles are prohibited. The Old West Lake Road Trail is among the mapped routes near the park. Inland, a 9-hole disc golf course sits in the Crabapple Picnic Area, and Lake Erie Canopy Tours, an aerial adventure park with a zipline and challenge course, operates adjacent to the Lodge from May through October. The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake stands next to the park and offers Lodge Rooms and Cottages, and the Geneva State Park Campground provides modern facilities nearby for those staying longer.
