Hueston Woods State Park

Hueston Woods State Park surrounds Acton Lake, a 625-acre lake, with campsites, cabins, and a resort lodge. The park covers 3561 acres in all, including 2936 acres of land, near College Corner, Ohio, and is managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Its mix of lake, woods, and preserved farmland draws visitors looking for boating and fishing alongside quieter pursuits like birding and walking wooded trails.

Hueston Woods Lodge & Conference Center overlooks Acton Lake, and the lodge also manages a variety of cabins in the park. The park's campground offers full hookup, electric, and non-electric campsites west of Acton Lake, along with an equestrian camp east of the lake, making the park suited to visitors ranging from lodge guests to tent campers and equestrians staying multiple nights.

On the ground

ODNR maintains more than 12 miles of trails, including the Cedar Falls Trail, a 0.8 mile loop, and the Indian Mound Trail, which runs 1.2 miles. The Indian Mound Trail passes the Indian Mound, an earthwork built by the Adena people between 800 B.C.E. and 100 C.E. ODNR took ownership of the mound in 1965 to protect it, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. That history connects to older evidence found nearby: archaeologists working near the park's edge at the Raisch-Smith site found stone tools, animal remains, and spear or arrow points from people who lived in the area more than 10,000 years ago. Near the golf course, the Doty Homestead Pioneer Farm and Museum is open to the public, adding a farming-era counterpoint to the older earthwork.

Other named routes mapped near the park include the Red Loop, which runs 7.65 miles, and the shorter Big Woods Trail. The adjacent Hueston Woods State Nature Preserve offers additional trails, though off-trail hiking is not permitted there. The park's historic features also include a Covered Bridge and a Dam/Spillway, giving walkers a handful of built landmarks to anchor a route around the lake and woods.
