Kiser Lake State Park

State Park · Ohio · Ohio Department of Natural Resources

Kiser Lake State Park is a 927-acre park in Conover, Ohio, built around a 396-acre lake that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources describes as known for clean, clear water. The remaining 531 acres of rolling wooded hills and wetlands give the park a quieter character than Ohio's larger reservoir parks, and the agency itself calls it a quiet and relaxing getaway. Because motorized boats are banned from the lake, the pace on the water stays slow, which suits paddlers, sailors, and anglers more than the ski-boat crowd.

It is a place for people who want a modest, walkable lake circuit rather than a sprawling destination: a short list of named trails, a swimming beach open through the summer months, and fishing piers set right on the shoreline. Camping options include Sherman Cabins, Camper Cabins, electric, non-electric, and tent-only sites, plus group camping away from the main campground.

On the ground

Water access defines the park. Four small launch areas and one boat ramp let sailors and paddlers onto the lake, and the marina rents boats, kayaks and canoes during its seasonal opening. The swimming beach, 300 feet long, runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and five fishing piers give anglers casting room for largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, crappie and wiper. A dam and spillway, the park's listed historic feature, mark where the lake itself was engineered.

On foot, the North Bay Trail is the longest maintained route at 1.5 miles and links toward the adjacent Kiser Lake Wetlands Nature Preserve, which has its own 0.7-mile boardwalk trail through the wetlands. Shorter legs, including the Marina Trail, Rabbit Run Trail, and Red Oak Trail, thread around the campground and shoreline, though the Pine Tree Trail is currently closed. Riders have 10 miles of bridle trail to work with, separate from the walking network. The land itself carries a glacial signature: the low ridges around the lake are end moraines, including one known as the Farmersville moraine that wraps the lake on three sides, a reminder that this basin was carved and dammed long before the Kiser family proposed the lake to the state in 1932. Tecumseh, the Shawnee warrior, lived and hunted on Buck Creek near present-day Urbana, not far from the Kiser Lake region. Simon Kenton was once held captive by the Shawnee near here and later settled in Urbana around 1802, with his remains lying in Oakdale Cemetery southeast of the city.
