Indian Lake was originally a cluster of natural kettle lakes formed as continental glaciers retreated from Ohio, including Old Indian Lake, Otter Lake, Black Lake, Sheep Pen Lake, Brush Lake, and Little Lake, which together covered about 640 acres. A large wetlands area known locally as the "Game Preserve" remains in the northeastern part of Indian Lake, with navigation channels cut through it, a remnant of the marshy landscape that predates the modern reservoir. The Pew Island Trail, a 0.7-mile route mapped near the park, loops around Pew Island and is reached by a causeway, giving walkers one of the few dedicated land routes in a park otherwise built around the water. Historic features noted in the park include the Dam/Spillway, the Historic Post Office Wolf Island, and a Historical Marker, scattered reminders of the engineering and settlement that shaped the lake.

Native American tribes lived and hunted in the region, and because of Indian Lake's proximity to the Miami River, the area became part of a trade route linking the Ohio River to Lake Erie. By the early 1800s, European settlers arrived, and accounts record conflicts between settlers and Native Americans, with frontiersmen Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton known to have traveled through the area. That layered history sits beneath a lake now shaped as much by dams and dredging as by the glacial depressions that first formed it.
