The weeping willow trees to the left are a famous feature of the lake's northern shore: the earliest of then were planted in the 1890s by Dr. John Towler, a professor at Hobart College, and additional ones followed in the early 1920s courtesy of the local American Legion post, who planted them as a memorial to local servicemen who died in the First World War.
