Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Morton County, North Dakota, just South of Mandan. The reconstructed buildings stand on the high area of the fort assigned to Infantry compagnies. The buildings and stables to the 7th Cavalry were on lower ground around a mile away to the South. First named Fort McKeen in August 1872 the post was renamed Fort Abraham Lincoln on November 19. Built in Military Department of Dakota with General Alfred Terry in St. Paul, Minnesota, in command from December 3, 1872. Known as the home of the Custer couple from September 1873 to 1876. The post was in use to 1891 or 1895. Some of the buildings were used again by soldiers transferred from Fort Yates from 1902 and the next few years. Indianertosset · CC0
