This is the maximum weight the vehicle can safely tow, accounting for its engine, transmission, frame, and brakes. It assumes a properly equipped hitch setup. Exceeding it stresses the drivetrain and cooling system and extends stopping distances.
Tongue Weight Capacity
This is the maximum downward force the vehicle's hitch and rear suspension can accept. As a rough rule of thumb, tongue weight that runs too far outside a moderate percentage of the trailer's total weight — too light or too heavy — tends to invite sway or squat. Manufacturer documentation for both vehicle and hitch will list the actual limit.
All three numbers are in the vehicle's owner's manual or available from the manufacturer. Aftermarket hitch equipment has its own ratings too, and the lowest number in the chain — vehicle, hitch, or trailer — is the one that governs.
