What Dry Weight Means

Dry weight (sometimes called unloaded vehicle weight) is the weight of a camper as it comes from the factory, before you add anything. No passengers, no cargo, no fresh water, propane, or personal gear. It's the starting point manufacturers use to describe how heavy a trailer or RV is before an owner starts loading it for a trip.

Because it excludes so much, dry weight is not what your camper actually weighs on the road. It's a baseline figure useful for comparing models and for beginning the math you'll need to tow safely.

Why Dry Weight Matters

Every tow vehicle and every hitch has weight limits. To stay within them, you need to know roughly how much your loaded camper weighs, and dry weight is the number you build that estimate from.

Once you know dry weight, you can add realistic estimates for water, propane, food, gear, and any aftermarket additions to get closer to the camper's actual loaded weight. Comparing that loaded weight against your tow vehicle's towing capacity and your hitch's rated capacity is what keeps a trip safe.

Towing a camper that's heavier than your vehicle or hitch can handle strains the engine, transmission, suspension, and brakes. It also makes the trailer harder to control, especially in wind, on grades, or during sudden maneuvers. None of this shows up as an immediate problem — it shows up as reduced margin exactly when you need it most.

What's Included in Dry Weight

Dry weight generally covers the camper's built structure and the equipment the manufacturer installs standard:

  • The frame, walls, roof, and floor
  • Windows, doors, and exterior siding
  • Built-in plumbing and electrical systems
  • Cabinetry, furniture, and other fixed interior components
  • Standard appliances and climate control equipment
  • Axles, tires, and the hitch or coupler itself

Optional equipment — upgraded appliances, added storage, solar setups, generators, and similar extras — is often left out of the published dry weight, even when installed at the factory. Manufacturers don't all define dry weight the same way, so treat the number as an approximation rather than an exact figure for your specific unit.

Dry Weight and Hitch Weight

Hitch weight (also called tongue weight on trailers with a ball hitch) is the downward force the trailer's front end exerts on the hitch of the tow vehicle. It's a portion of the trailer's total weight, not a separate add-on, so it's already reflected in dry weight and in the loaded weight of the camper.

As a general guideline, hitch weight that falls in a moderate range relative to the trailer's total weight tends to tow more predictably. Too little hitch weight can make a trailer prone to swaying; too much can overload the tow vehicle's rear axle and hitch receiver. If you're unsure whether your setup falls in a reasonable range, a weigh station or truck scale can give you an actual hitch weight measurement, which is more useful than any factory estimate.

A weight distribution hitch, when used, spreads some of that hitch weight across the axles of both the tow vehicle and the trailer. Choosing and adjusting one correctly depends on knowing your actual hitch weight, not just the dry weight figure from a spec sheet.

Dry Weight vs. GVWR

Dry weight and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) are frequently confused, but they answer different questions.

Dry weight is what the camper weighs empty, as shipped. GVWR is the maximum weight the camper is rated to safely be at, fully loaded — including cargo, fluids, passengers if applicable, and any installed options. GVWR is a ceiling set by the manufacturer based on the strength of the axles, frame, tires, and brakes.

The gap between dry weight and GVWR is a rough estimate of your cargo-carrying capacity — how much you can add before hitting the rated limit. In practice, this gap is often smaller than expected once water, propane, and gear are accounted for, so it's worth weighing a loaded camper rather than relying on subtraction alone.

How to Find Your Camper's Dry Weight

Most campers display key weight information on a compliance or specification sticker, commonly located near the trailer's chassis, inside a storage compartment, or just inside the entry door. This sticker often lists dry weight alongside GVWR and axle ratings.

If the sticker is missing, worn, or unclear, the manufacturer's published specifications are a reliable secondary source. When in doubt, contacting the manufacturer or a dealer directly is the most accurate way to confirm the figures for your specific model and configuration.

For real trip planning, the most trustworthy number is the one you get by driving your fully loaded camper and tow vehicle across a certified scale. This accounts for every accessory, tank level, and item of gear actually on board — something no factory figure can do.
