- Keep a respectful distance from wildlife and never feed animals. Human food changes animal behavior and can make them dependent on unhealthy sources.
- Pack out all trash, including food scraps, which can attract wildlife to trails and roads.
- Follow local rules on collecting plants, rocks, or wildlife, since these vary by park and season for good ecological reasons.
Choices That Support Biodiversity Beyond the Trail
Reducing overall consumption is one of the more durable ways an individual can lower pressure on natural habitats, since resource extraction — logging, mining, water diversion, and land conversion for agriculture — is a leading driver of habitat loss.
Choosing products with credible, third-party sustainability certifications, when available, gives some assurance that a supply chain accounts for habitat and species impacts, though no label is perfect and it's worth understanding what each certification actually verifies.
Reducing waste and recycling properly limits pollution that ends up in soil, rivers, and oceans, where it degrades habitat quality for both plants and animals.
Supporting Conservation Beyond Personal Habits
Individuals can extend their impact by supporting the institutions and efforts that do this work at scale:
- Volunteering with local land trusts, restoration projects, or citizen-science monitoring programs
- Supporting organizations with a track record of transparent, on-the-ground conservation work
- Participating in public comment periods or local planning decisions that affect natural land use
- Backing regional projects that protect corridors connecting fragmented habitats
Bringing children or newcomers into natural areas, and explaining what they're seeing, is one of the most lasting ways to build long-term support for conservation. People tend to protect what they've had a direct, positive experience with.
Restoration and Land Rehabilitation
Where habitat has already been degraded, restoration can bring back function even if it can't recreate the original ecosystem exactly. Common approaches include removing invasive species, reintroducing native plants suited to local soil and climate, restoring natural water flow to wetlands and streams, and allowing degraded land to rest so soil and vegetation can recover.
Restoration works best as a long-term commitment rather than a one-time planting event. Newly restored habitat needs monitoring and maintenance for years before it becomes self-sustaining, and early setbacks are normal rather than a sign of failure.
Collaborative projects that involve nearby landowners, Indigenous communities, and local agencies tend to hold up better over time than efforts run by a single outside group, because the people living closest to the land have the strongest incentive to sustain it.

Rather than trying to address every driver of biodiversity loss at once, it helps to pick a few habits that are realistic to sustain: reducing unnecessary consumption, being deliberate about waste, following responsible practices when visiting natural areas, and supporting at least one local or regional conservation effort consistently over time.
Consistency matters more than scale. Ecosystems respond to sustained pressure and sustained care alike, and small, repeated actions by many people add up in ways that a single large gesture usually doesn't.
